Each essay is evaluated by two highly-trained raters. The writing ability score is based on ratings in 4 categories (Linguistic Competency/Grammatical Accuracy, Linguistic Competency/Range of Vocabulary, Development and Task Completion, and Genre Appropriateness and Writing Conventions) with the candidates’ scores from the multiple-choice grammar test factored in to account for 20% of the writing ability score.
The scoring process is detailed in the Results and Certificates section.
The CEFR is the acronym of The Common European Framework for Languages. This is a European attempt to describe competencies that a learner of a foreign language would have at 6 different levels (A1/A2/B1/B2/C1/C2). Though this document is by no means definitive, it is important as a tool to assist in standardizing teaching content and testing goals.
